Every few weeks my Sidekick starts the whole "lets get me microchipped" conversation !! Knowing that this was becoming more of a reality I knew that I would have to take action..or I would find myself in the back seat of the car,while my Sidekick tries to console me by offering a ice-cream when the whole ordeal was over.
There just had to be a better way..so late one evening I grabbed the iPad ( much easier to swipe if you have paws ! ) and started my search. It didn't take long before I found BlanketID the answer to all my microchipping woes!!
Not only is this a way better solution then microchipping ,the tags ROCK !!
We were able to chat with Cate Hubbard the founder of BlanketID and find out more about this wonderful Canadian company and how the whole system works.

Q.Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you came to set up BlanketID ?
After working for too many years in Advertising in London we decided to take life down a notch and head to Vancouver Island for a better quality of life and look to do something more worthwhile. We had known for a long time that pets would be a big part of our lives - both of us have had numerous cats and dogs over the years, but Martin has always attracted stray cats that seem to adopt us! We decided that we would look for a cat and not a kitten, perhaps one that needed a little help and a lucky break - actually we found two! Milly and Poppet (our two rescues) were very troubled, frightened, little kitties that initially needed much care, attention and nurturing. While in the process of adoption we came close to so many animals that had been lost with no hope of finding their owners. Some of these animals were obviously treasured pets that just never found their way back home. The thought of that ever happening to our girls would be devastating to us, and as we pondered the unthinkable, the idea for Blanket was born. An idea that would assist in getting lost pets home quickly and help to raise some funds for the great organizations that care for animals that have no-one else. We also get to have so many great 'animal-crazy' people in our life too!

Q.How does BlanketID work ?
A blanketID tag carries a unique number that is linked to your pet's profile that you store securely at blanketID.com. When you create your pet's profile you can add any and all information that you would like someone to know if they found your pet. You can include your pet's medical details, allergies, dietary requirements, care instructions, additional emergency contact numbers and you can also upload a photo. Now anyone finding your pet has instant 24/7 access to these vital details by simply entering the tag's number at blanketID.com. If you move or change your phone number, you can easily update these details online. This is great for travelers as you can change your address online whenever you need to. If you lose your pet while traveling, it's no use having someone phone your home, they need to know where you are now. If you report your pet lost, blanketID automatically sends your pet's photo and details by broadcast email to our database of shelters, animal hospitals and SPCA offices within a 15 mile radius of where you last saw your pet. Local blanketID members are also included in this broadcast. As a member, you can review and update your pet's photo and details to make sure that they are current before the email broadcast is sent. To help you, blanketID also sends you an email detailing who has been notified so that you can make follow up calls if you choose to. You can also print a customized "lost pet" poster directly from the site to get the word out quickly. Remember, our lost pet broadcast contains a photo of your pet. Now there is a chance for it to be identified even if it has lost its collar and tag.

Q.Where does the BlanketID service work ?
The online information can be accessed world wide and we actually have members in places including Brazil, Pakistan, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The email broadcasts provide cover across the whole of North America. Our site also works with smart phones for instant access on the move.

Q.How is BlanketID different than microchipping / tattoos ?
We think of blanket as the first line of defense. It's a highly visible and secure way to give immediate access to the information that you want anyone finding your pet to know. It means that you don't have to rely on someone taking your animal to a rescue or pound, or worry that they have the wrong scanner or won't find the chip. Also too many people neglect to keep their information up to date with the chip registry and so the chip is rendered useless anyway. Our tags look great too!

Q.Can you tell us a bit more about the Blanket Fund for Animals ?
15% of our profits are given to the Blanket Fund for Animals to help animals in need of care and treatment.These funds are distributed to organizations that help sick, injured, abandoned and homeless animals. It's the core of what we do and we try to allot funds based on members' addresses so that everyone is supporting their local animal welfare. At the beginning of 2011 we launched a new initiative to help raise funds for animal-related non-profit organizations. This new program is called 'FundsForever' and is designed to allow companies and retailers to create an on-going stream of funds for selected animal welfare organizations. We are hoping that our FundsForever program will help to better target some of our funds at a local level and make us aware of more organizations that could use our little bit of help.
